Slots are available for Naslund-Mann students and alums in a full-length manuscript workshop for prose, offered via Zoom during the virtual summer residency, June 20 – 27.
Manuscripts in fiction, creative nonfiction, middle-grade, and young adult are welcome. The faculty-led workshop is capped at five participants, and all five slots must be filled for the workshop to run. The deadline to sign up is Monday, December 31.Â
Â
Participants must have a completed manuscript ready to email to other workshop members by April 1. There is no maximum length; however, the suggested maximum length for first-time authors to query agents is 80,000 to 100,000 words. MG and YA may be shorter.
Â
Before residency begins, workshop participants read the entirety of the other four manuscripts, make marginal notations, and write an overview for each manuscript of at least 3 – 5 double-spaced pages commenting on the work’s strengths and weaknesses.
Â
The introductory workshop focuses on assigned reading by the workshop leader. At subsequent workshop meetings, a full two hours is spent discussing each manuscript as a whole. After a manuscript is discussed, other participants email their annotated copy and 3- to 5-page overview to the author and copy the leader. At the last meeting, all students present revisions of 3 to 5 pages written during the residency after hearing their own manuscript discussed.Â
Â
Cost for alums: $1,760. Half is due April 1, and the balance is due June 1.Â
Â
Schedule: 10:45 – 11:45 a.m. ET. Sunday, June 21. Introductory workshop meeting.
3:15 – 5:30 p.m. ET. Sunday – Friday, June 21 – 26
Members of the FLMW have access to the entire residency schedule but only workshop sessions are required.
We’ll announce the leader once we know the workshop will take place.
