“The vocation is making theater”: An interview with Gabriel Jason Dean

March 21, 2024

Last summer, faculty member Gabriel Jason Dean (writing for TV, screen, and stage) sat with IWR for their New Era Americans project, which, in the words of IWR, “inventories people who are rethinking and remarking the aesthetic and experience of the American Dream.”

In this wide-ranging conversation, Gabriel and IWR kick things off with a not-small inquiry: “Who are you? Where are you from? Where are you going?”

From there the conversation ranges into the territory of free-range children, seances, anti-mentors, daily rituals, writing craft, salvation, theater, neighbors, love, WWE, bootstraps, debtor’s prison, and invitation.

Oh, and “What are you trying to say?”
