poem nearing middle-life # 2

it wasn’t that we didn’t learn

our lesson. it’s that the thing dragging

us back into the lake of Half life of XXX

& How to hide pupil dilation was stronger

than the half read pamphlets on The First Step to a New You!

& Not Your Grandfather’s Twelve Step Group

there are so many parts of we

that I’ve kept hidden from you. too afraid

it would change the way you looked

at me. but to tell you now

would be asking you to renarrate

every story you’ve known about me

every What did you do today

and Sorry the meeting ran late

it’s a shame how well we can act

well. it’s a shame to be left

in hiding with no seeker. the way

the star had its very last explosion

a decade ago but its final light

will not reach the back of our eye

until we are much too old

to find wonder in the distance it traveled.
